Choosing Your Solar Company

What Homeowners Need To Know About A Solar Company

Upgrading with solar panels is an investment that needs you to carefully consider which solar company to team up with. A trustworthy, experienced, and emphatic solar partner will make your life easier, stress-free, and won’t rip you off.

Here are some important notes to consider when finding a solar company that will give you your peace of mind and bang for the buck.

1. Look at the solar company’s reviews

What do customers say about them? There are national databases that list local solar installers and their reviews. There’s also Facebook, Google reviews, and Yelp. You can even ask a company for references so you can talk directly to their previous customers in your area. You can get honest reviews from references from pre-installment, follow-up services, and other information to help you decide whether the company is for you or not.

2. Their business history

How long have they been in business and how many households have they serviced? More than their longevity, their track record should be impressive. They can be a young company but if their references give glowing reviews, you might want to consider them as well.

3. Will there be a site visit pre-installation?

Today, technology allows us to prepare initial designs for solar without having to go to an address physically. However, it would still be great to have an installer visit in person to check the physical quality of the roof, assess potential leak problems, and confirm the sun exposure, among others. This also helps the company provide you with transparent information before you sign that contract.

4. Know which paperwork will be secured by the solar provider and which ones will be yours

In some areas, a homeowners association approval may be required prior to solar installation. Talk to your potential solar company if they can handle it for you. You can also ask about other paperwork such as local, state, and federal incentives, and most importantly, building permits.

5. What are their financing options?

There is so much to be considered to know your upfront out-of-pocket and monthly payments. Your local solar provider should be knowledgeable about federal and local incentives such as investment tax credits. Talk to your solar provider to know more about your options.

6. What are the warranties covered?

Your solar system may have three warranties covered: performance, product, and service. Performance is a guarantee of rated energy production over a certain period of years. The product covers the repair or replacement of physical components of both panels and inverters. And service is for the assessment of potential issues as part of your warranty.

There are a few other concerns such as what happens if you plan on moving out or how long will the panels and warranties last. All these questions can be directly asked during your consultations.
