Lifespan of Solar Panels

Solar panels are a great investment for your family’s future. With steady growth in the number of homeowners switching to solar, now is the perfect time to upgrade.

But before you invest, it’s wise to learn more about it just as you would with any other investment. One important thing to know about solar panels is their lifespan.

Manufacturers often offer a 20-25 year warranty for their solar panels. The guarantee includes the promise that your panels will still be able to produce at least 80% of the initial output peak rate after 20-25 years of use.

This means that each solar panel is expected to have no more than a 1% decrease in efficiency per year.

In 2010, the Centre for Alternative Technology did a test on solar panels they’ve installed in 1997. Each solar panel had an output of 75W upon installation. 13 years later, the average output of the panels was around 68.5W, which represents a decrease in efficiency rate of 9% in 13 years or around .7% per year.

With solar technology improving at such a rapid and record-breaking phase, we might be able to see current solar panels’ maximum efficiency stretched to more than 25 years.

In the meantime, as a homeowner to already has a solar panel system or is planning to have it installed, we have a couple of suggestions on how to extend the life of your solar panels.

First, try to avoid any physical damage to the surface of your solar panels as scratches and other damages can hamper the efficiency rate.

You should also do regular solar panel maintenance by physically checking your panels and system, as well as production rate through monitoring software and apps.

You can talk to your solar panel company on ways they can help with the maintenance as some offer free regular checkups. Remember that it’s smart to always seek the help of a professional when it comes to assessing your solar panel system.
